Designing Immersive Experiences for Spine Surgeons
Summary
March 2020 - Present
Goal
Proprio is developing a cutting edge mixed reality surgical navigation platform, to aid surgeons during spinal deformity surgeries. Leveraging virtual reality, 3D imaging, robotics, and AI, the goal is to increase a surgeon’s accuracy and efficiency during pedicle screw placement and also reduce the need for intraoperative use of harmful radiation imaging techniques.
Problem
Current surgical methods for pedicle screw placement utilize “ scan snapshots” that require exposing the surgical staff and the patient to radiation. These snapshots are cumbersome and disruptive mid procedure. How might we reduce radiation exposure, improve efficiency and accuracy for surgeons throughout the procedure?
My roles & responsibilities
I lead the product design process, starting from early research and hypothesis, through defining requirements, creating user flows, wireframes, visual designs, and prototypes to effectively conceptualizing and communicating detailed interaction behaviors that support decision-making and development.
I partner closely with UX Research to collaborate on research plans and clearly communicate the key research questions we need answers to.
I independently utilize lean user research methods to make quick design decisions when needed, which can include interviews, observation sessions, and remote user tests. I synthesize research findings for stakeholders.
As a product owner I own multiple UX features from beginning to end and ensure the product/feature is built to spec and achieves project goals.
I work with cross functional teams of product managers, researchers, software testers and product managers to deliver product features to spec.
I elevate the visual design of the customer experience to drive higher engagement with users.
I effectively advocate and design for the customer through objective data such as market analysis, customer insights, technical constraints/opportunities, and business insights.
I present design work to UX partners, cross-disciplinary teams, and executive leaders.
I contribute to and help manage a design system in Figma (components, usage guidelines, documentation) so that other team members can get what they need intuitively and efficiently.
